Besides the renewable energy fuels including wind and solar, there is another fuel to add to the diverse portfolio of sustainables. Biogas is a natural byproduct of a variety of waste processes. Comprised mostly of methane and carbon dioxide, biogas can be captured from operations such as landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, farming operations and food processing plants and used as a fuel source to generate electric power. The technology of creating and capturing biogas and the engine generator t... More...

As I sit on my return flight from Washington, D.C., to Indianapolis, I ponder all the messages I heard at the 2012 annual meeting of the United States Combined Heat and Power Association (USCHPA). For an industry trade group whose initials are no longer confused by legislators as the U.S. California Highway Patrol Association, as many members joked during the conference, we must be feeling quite like celebrities in recent months. The cause, the rallying cry, has been going on for years with little fanfa... More...

Some government- owned utilities, such as municipal utilities, interagencies and federal authorities, are located in power markets that operate in a real time pricing environment where the market price of electricity is driven by supply and demand at any particular time of day. Those utilities are discovering that there are opp... More...

I have had the opportunity over the years to participate, as both a presenter and an audience member, with a lot of diverse organizations that have a very common purpose: the advancement of combined heat and power, aka cogeneration. A short list of these organizations includes U.S. Combined Heat and Power Association , U.S. EPA CHP Application Centers , International District Energy Association , Cogen Europe , and the U.S. Green Building Council . I’ve also been a supporter of publications covering the... More...
