NFPA 110: Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems, 2002 edition, the most recent version of the National Fire Protection Association's code applicable to acute-care hospitals, requires Community Hospital in Watervliet, MI, to maintain a backup power system for these applications:

    • Life safety, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and ingress and egress
    • Critical care, including the emergency electrical outlets for operating rooms, medicine dispensing, and other critical-care areas
    • Fire pump, a standby pump that supplies water to teh sprinkler system in case of an utility-power failure

The backup system must be able to assume these loads within 10 seconds of an utility-power outage.
