University Upgrades at a Glance

Comments

Since energy savings tracking began in November 2000, the University of Utah has saved $6.6 million in energy costs. In fact, the amount is $400,000 more than projected for a project that was originally valued at $39 million, and paid for with the future utility savings financial model as offered by Chevron Energy Solutions.

The cogeneration unit described in the article was the sixth phase of a comprehensive energy performance contract that provided energy conservation improvements to 81 buildings, plus chillers and cooling towers.

Almost 68,000 light fixtures were upgraded, plus 82 variable-frequency drives for HVAC systems, 95 energy-efficient motors, and 400 fume hoods. The campus also gained three new chillers and two new cooling towers.

For water conservation, 600 low-flow toilet replacements were installed and low-flow aerators were added to sinks. Even faulty radiator valves were repaired. Total water savings over two years came to 11.6 million cubic feet.
